On Monday, Burlington took a unified step toward addressing some of the biggest challenges facing our community.
The City Council unanimously approved a resolution calling on Governor Phil Scott and the Legislature to take 10 specific actions on homelessness, public safety, mental health, and other urgent needs. Among them: helping move forward the proposed 100-bed year-round shelter we highlighted last week.
The City is also asking the state to:
* Expand daytime shelter capacity across Chittenden County
* Reconsider upcoming restrictions to Vermont's emergency motel program
* Restore mental health capacity and improve access to acute care
* Provide additional resources to the Chittenden County court system
* Continue support from the Vermont State Police in Burlington
* Help coordinate a regional response to youth violence

Many of the challenges Burlington is facing extend beyond our city’s borders and require action at the local, regional, and state levels. More shelter, better access to mental health care and treatment, a functioning court system that can provide both accountability and support, and stronger coordination across government are all essential to building a safer and healthier community for everyone, especially our children and families.
The resolution alone will not create those resources. Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak and Governor Scott are already working on many of these challenges, but we need the Legislature’s continued partnership and policy support to deliver on-the-ground results for Burlington.
